Musicophilia Tales of Music and the Brain Revised and Expanded by Oliver Sacks Author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a HatNATIONAL BESTSELLER A Best Book of the Year: Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and Financial Times
With his trademark compassion and erudition, Oliver Sacks explores the place music occupies in the brain and how it affects the human condition. In Musicophilia, he shows us a variety of what he calls "musical misalignments." Among them: a man struck by lightning who suddenly desires to become a pianist at the age of forty-two; an entire group of children with Williams syndrome, who are hypermusical from birth; people with "amusia," to whom a symphony sounds like the clattering of pots and pans; and a man whose memory spans only seven seconds--for everything but music.

| | | From Sharon B. of Queensland, Australia:
"We've been meeting once a month for about 6 years now and a few years ago the meeting seemed to lose something and conversation was no longer primarily about books. So I chose each person's name at random, they each have their own month and its their call. They choose the book, venue and how the meeting will run. I feel that this has given ownership back to each member, applied a tiny amount of pressure (which is healthy) and we never know how the meeting is going to pan out until we are there."
